Using any tool as a sole marketing tool might not be the best idea. We used Facebook ads successfully at MavenHut, but it might not suit your company.

Can Facebook Ads be effective as a sole marketing tool for a startup? I don’t think that you should have only one marketing tool. Facebook Ads are really good, we used them extensively for MavenHut, for Solitaire Arena, but bear in mind that Solitaire Arena was a product based on Facebook. For a startup, though, I don’t know if Facebook might be the right tool.

In my experience and from what I’ve talked to some of my friends that have other startups, the audience on Facebook looks for entertainment, they don’t really have an intent to buy so selling things on Facebook might be a hit-or-miss thing.

The best advice that I can give you is you should test it and see if it works for you, if the audience works for you. You should do this with any with any marketing tool at your disposal.
